Coach Philippe Montanier is leaving Estoril Praia to train a historic French club, AS St. Étienne. The Portuguese club confirmed the departure of the French coach and the arrival of Scottish coach Ian Cathro, who will train Estoril Praia until June 2028. The 39-year-old Scottish coach has been at Estoril since the 2024/25 season and, at the end of this season, left his continuity at the club in the air. Wanted by Brondby, Denmark, and Championship emblems, Ian Cathro accepted the Saint-Étienne project, a historic French club that aims to return to Ligue 1. The Scottish coach, former assistant to Nuno Espírito Santo, leaves Estoril with a record of 71 games, 23 wins, 20 draws, and 28 losses. This season, the Cascais emblem finished the Liga Portugal in 10th place. The club, founded in 1919, is the second most titled in Gaulish football, recently surpassed by Paris SG, which already has 14 Ligue 1 titles, four more than Saint-Étienne. However, the last title of the verts was already in the distant 1980/81 season. With 70 presences in Ligue 1, Saint-Étienne was relegated for the last time in the 2024/25 season.
